Criteria TGD fund for students 

Introduction 

TGD stimulates activities in which the TU/e community can learn from (use of) technologies in the context of a developing economy. An objective of TGD, therefore, is to promote research by TU/e students in developing countries/Global South. TGD yearly offers students of TU/e financial means to execute his/her research. Students are invited to apply for TGD funding if the criteria below are met.  

Criteria 

  • Research (thesis research/internship) needs to take place in a developing country/Global South 

  • Research is part of his/her study. His/her supervisor has approved of his/her research proposal.  

  • The focus of the study needs to be on technology in relation to its (local)social, economical, etc. context 

  • The topic of study needs to be relevant for society (people) and/or related to sustainable development.  

  • Outcomes of research are (likely to be) useful and relevant to the TU/e community (other students, researchers, professionals, managers, etc.) from an educational/research perspective.  

  • The student is willing to co-operate (with TDG Activity Committee) in presenting his/her results after returning 

  • the student is a fulltime TU/e student 

  • If the student doesn’t finish the project, the fund received has to be refunded. 

  • The student has to apply for the fund before leaving to go to the place where the project takes place. 

  • They students spends at least 6 weeks working on the project in the developing country. 

 

Next to this the TGD committee strives to (“soft” requirements): 

  • Provide funding to students who are unlikely to receive (a) grant(s) through other organizations (For example students that don’t get funds from FIE because it’s their second project).  

  • Provides funding to a number of students researching a diversity of topics  

Process 

TGD strives to grant at least 4 times/year funding (500 Euro) to 1 or more students. At predetermined dates (1st of March, June, September, December) all requests are considered and a decision is made by the Daily Board on who meets the criteria and fits best into the Committee’s additional “soft” requirements.  

Students applying need to hand in their documents at the Secretariat of TGD at the latest 14 days before the due date. If documents are approved of, the Committee possibly invites the student for a short interview. Decisions are communicated within 3 days after the due date via e-mail.  

Required documents 

  • Summary research proposal in which relevance to the TU/e community is described 

  • Overview of budget 

  • Prospect of the student to receive other grants/financial support by other organizations 

  • The student needs to demonstrate a research proposal approved by his/her supervisor.
