How To Do a Project Abroad

Fieldwork in the Global South

Students who are interested in doing fieldwork in a Global South country can participate in ongoing TU/e research initiatives or look for external projects suitable for an internship or MSc thesis project.

Keep in mind:

  • Rules differ between TU/e Departments;

  • Students are responsible for managing the process (e.g. find a project, supervisor, visas, etc);

  • Manage expectations between organisation & University;

  • Have project tasks and responsibilities very clear, agreed upon, and written;

  • The process takes time so start well in advance (min. 6 months);

  • Research cultural context and local habits for a good experience.

All TU/e students who wish to do a project abroad should follow the steps here.

Other Financial Sponsorship

There are two financial sponsorship possibilities for TU/e students who wish to go outside the European Union area:

  • Holland Scholarship (HS, 1250€):

    • Limited number of places available;

    • Selection based on the student’s grade average;

    • Per quartile, there is only 1 request & selection round;

    • Student has to be a minimum 3 months abroad for a minimum 15 ECTS.

  • Fund International Experience (FIE, 500€):

    • Can be requested on a continuous basis;

    • Granted for projects/exchange outside the EU when Holland Scholarship does not pay out, or when the student is too late to apply for the HS scholarship;

    • Student has to be a minimum 3 months abroad for a minimum 15 ECTS.

The scholarships are processed within the Mobility Online portal. When they register in the portal, students can indicate whether they want to be considered for a grant. They will then be led through the complete procedure.
