TU/e Green Week 2022

During this year’s iteration of the TU/e Green Week, TGD once again collaborated with Go Green Office to organize fun and informative events regarding the promotion of sustainability at the TU/e Campus. Events ranged from a Campus Safari and Sustainable Product Market to a sustainable clothing info-lecture and Q&A with the director of an interesting documentary, Prince of Muck. Kenya: Connect Energy Sources

SparkEnergy has and it is presenting a box to which people can connect their energy sources to in order to share microgrids, especially in Africa where this option is still not seen as possible while being in an energy lacking context.

SparkEnergy organized a case night together with Team Energy and TGD as an interactive case where participants share ideas about proper implementation of energy grids, could gain more knowledge about the current energy transition and get up close to the perspective of a company that directs its effort towards it.

From Temporary Shelter to Semi-Permanent Homes

This workshop investigated the transitional period from a temporary structure into a (semi-)permanent solution, in pre- and post-disaster settings, over multiple sessions. The course combined realistic design thinking with actual research strategies, related to the overall themes of traditional architecture, non-engineered earthquake design, building with natural and waste materials & overall improvement of living conditions.

In a team, people worked on the development of a Design Brief. They got the assignment to define a realistic and understandable description of their concept, strategy, proposed techniques, materials, environmental solutions; to be visualized by a short graphical presentation.

Nurdle Soup X TGD

Nurdle Soup and TGD collaborated for an insightful event to inform people about microplastics and socio-economic challenges. People with interest in global sustainability and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals could interact with the presenters and share their feedback, and get a sneak-peek of the second iteration of Nurdle Soup’s device.

The Social Dilemma with TGD & Chronos

Chronos, the debate association at TU/e, had fruitful discussions with TGD and interested attendants about topics such as social justice, developing countries, and other worldwide concerns in this event. Preluding the event, a dinner was shared, followed by an insightful debate on topics of socio-eco justice.

Rob Greenfield is a wildly inspiring environmental activist, adventurer, and “dude making a difference”. Rob lives up to the famous Gandhi quote “Be the change you wish to see in the world” by showing the world that change starts with us, individuals. He has biked across the United States on a bicycle made out of bamboo, wore all the trash he produced for 30 days, and went an entire year growing his own food. He joins us to share and discuss small, simple steps that can make all our lives a little greener, healthier, and happier.

In this lunch lecture, Dr. Kaj Morel shines his light on each of them while questioning their desirability. In his talk, he will introduce the term Purpose Economy which associates fundamentally rethinking the current economic system. It bases itself on a redefinition of what is desirable value offering and introduces an alternative perspective that selects for socio-environmental contributions to the community as a whole.

In his time as CEO, he drastically transformed the company to make it the most sustainable in the sector.

The story of teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg is told through compelling, never-before-seen footage in this intimate documentary from Swedish director Nathan Grossman. Starting with her one-person school strike for climate action outside the Swedish Parliament, Grossman follows Greta—a shy student with Asperger’s—in her rise to prominence and her galvanizing global impact as she sparks school strikes around the world. The film culminates with her extraordinary wind-powered voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to speak at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York City.

 

Reform In Education - Towards Environmental and Social Responsibility 22.04.2021

For engineering students that framework has often become ‘technical solution-oriented. This reductionist engineering framework, which is often deeply embedded in universities, can be enriched through education that provides global context and pluralist perspectives. Creating critical awareness of the educational system we are a part of is vital. We select speakers that are providing more conscious teaching methods/systems in which they are aware of their own framework and ‘position’ knowledge and perspectives.
